Katherine Mansfield's short story 'The Fly' is a social commentary conveyed in an allegorical and symbolic manner. In this lesson, we'll review the story's plot and analyze its underlying meaning.
The Fly is a tale of loss, of loss of feeling, and of cruelty and hope. It's a beautifully written story which deals with growing old, the end of a dynasty, the aftermath of the Great War and the way mettle can be tested by challenges - admirably at times, destructively at others.

The Fly Modernists’ conventions and concerns are deeply reflected in The Fly by Katherine Mansfield. The 3rd person fragmented narration used reflects Modernist conventions. The use of this can be seen in the focus shifts from Mr Woodifield to the Boss and finally the fly which allow the responders to empathise with each of the characters providing different perspectives.
